The Problems with Chemical Drain Cleaners
If you own a home, chances are you have had to deal with a clogged drain. When this happens you may be tempted to reach for a chemical drain cleaner. However, these chemicals are not without their drawbacks.
The most important thing to remember about these products is they are very corrosive. This is why they work so well on clogs. Unfortunately, they can also eat away at other surfaces. Surfaces around the drain can be damaged. Also, being corrosive they can eventually damage the pipes, especially if used frequently. In addition, they can damage any clothing you are wearing if they accidentally spill or splash on them.
They can also cause injury. If they splash or spill on your skin or somehow get into your eye, you can have a serious chemical burn. The fumes can also be dangerous so they need to be used in a well-ventilated area. More importantly, they can be deadly if swallowed, so they need to be stored in areas where kids and pets cannot get into them.
These chemicals should not be used on every drain or clog. For example, they are not recommended for garbage disposals because if they are turned on the chemicals can splash. If you have a septic tank, you should avoid these chemicals, since they will kill the bacteria that are meant to help break down the sewage. In addition, they should never be used in toilets, since they are heavier than water and are more likely to fall to the bottom of the bowl and may not make it to the clog. Also, if the drain is completely blocked they may not be strong enough to do the job but can leave you with a bigger more dangerous mess.
Also keep in mind these chemicals are pollutants and can cause some damage to the environment. Finally, they can also be responsible for starting new clogs since some of the inert chemicals can cling to the pipe.
