How and Why You Should Repipe Your Home

Homeownership comes with the responsibility to identify issues that can damage or devalue your home. Plumbing is a major infrastructure in the home that requires many systems to work hand-in-hand for safe and functional use of water. We can help you with our repiping services.

How Do I Know If I Need to Repipe My Home?

When any part of the plumbing system is compromised it is important to address it early because ignoring it can result in expensive repairs. Considering all pipes get old over time, repiping is a reality that most homeowners will eventually face. Listed below are common signs that repiping is necessary.

Homes with galvanized pipes should be replaced immediately. Galvanized pipes are the leading cause of corrosion and rust in plumbing lines which results in clogs and poses a health risk to occupants in the home. Most homes built before 1970 have galvanized pipes. Corrosion of these pipes is the leading cause of leaks and low water pressure. If left unresolved, major plumbing issues can develop resulting in huge and unnecessary repair costs.

Pipes that spring leaks in one or more areas can be a consequence of many factors. For example, if copper pipes are leaking it can be a result of low-grade copper in the home. Another cause of leaks may be the chemical composition of regional water eating the (low-grade) copper lining as it travels through plumbing lines. Galvanized pipes that are corroded are another common source of leaks. Despite the source of the leak, leaving these problems unresolved can result in damage to other areas of the home (e.g. ruined carpets, buckled floors, mold, damaged walls or ceilings).

If water exits faucets in a slow or weak manner it can be an indication of low water pressure. Poor water pressure generally means pipes are deteriorating or water is blocked by corrosion or rust accumulated over years in plumbing lines.

Discoloration of water is another indicator that galvanized pipes are breaking down. If faucets are producing yellow or rust-colored water it means corrosion and rust are at advanced stages. This is a clear warning sign the water system is on the brink of failure.
